SONA MANIFESTO

IN AN ERA WHERE THE BALANCE BETWEEN PROGRESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IS INCREASINGLY FRAGILE, WATER EMERGES AS A METAPHOR FOR LIFE AND OUR INTERCONNECTEDNESS WITH ALL LIFE. YET AT THE SAME TIME, AN ABUSED VICTIM OF GROWING HUMAN PRESSURE ON NATURE.

This vital matrix, which has inspired myths, philosophies, and worldviews, is now at the heart of a crisis that goes beyond the scientific domain, raising ethical questions and a call for collective responsibility. In a regulatory context that is often fragmented and inadequate, water sustainability takes on the contours of an existential—if not spiritual—imperative: we must rethink our relationship with this fundamental resource, integrating ethical awareness, scientific knowledge, collective consciousness, and intergenerational responsibility. Only through an integrated and forward-thinking approach we can prevent water from becoming a source of conflict, and instead restore its rightful role: a shared heritage to be protected with respect and wisdom, as the very icon of life itself.

SONA is both an artistic project and a research committee composed of individuals who, thanks to the multifaceted nature of their expertise, activate synergies between the worlds of culture and science, aiming at a deeper understanding and respect for the essential resource that is water. This awareness resonates with the solemn Declarations of the Fundamental Human Rights and with the Constitution of many countries, where water is recognized as a right inherent to life, and as such, must be safeguarded.

Human civilizations, from East to West, have always symbolically associated water with purification and spiritual elevation, with the sacredness of Creation, with fertility and purity of lifestyle. They have developed complex and profound mythologies that can still inspire today’s human choices and research into environmental sustainability and scientific paths.

Awareness of the physical and metaphysical value of water, and its equitable use for human purposes—respecting the quality, hygiene, and safety of the resource—must be translated into adherence to principles of human solidarity and universal accessibility, also in the interest of future generations. These generations must be able to enjoy a healthy and intact environment, biodiversity, and ecosystems, as affirmed in the newly formulated Article 9 of the Italian Constitution.

In particular, art must listen to life, and celebrate its flow.

SONA is not just a sound artwork: it is an invitation. An invitation to pause, to listen to the hidden heartbeat of the Earth, the breath of water, the primordial sound that connects all forms of life.In a fast-paced world increasingly distant from Creation, SONA celebrates the power of deep listening as a revolutionary act of awareness.

Through sounds collected in everyday places and in the most remote and awe-inspiring corners of the planet, SONA guides human beings to rediscover themselves as part of a whole: the eternal cycle of water, an element that unites, flows through, and nourishes us.

All this has inspired our core principles:
- Art as a bridge between humanity and nature

We believe that ancestral sound is one of the purest languages to reconnect with the metaphysical, more-than-human world.
- Conscious listening
Deep listening is a meditative practice, a journey toward greater ecological and spiritual awareness.
- Water: source of life and inspiration
Water is at the centre of SONA. We aim to promote a culture of care and respect for this precious resource thoroughly.
- Dialogue between science, art, and spirituality
SONA is born from the convergence of different disciplines, in the belief that only an integrated approach can bring about real change.

To take part in SONA means embarking on a journey—both inward and outward—where sound becomes a revolutionary tool for reflection, emotion, and transformation.
